The success story of Surbhi Manocha Choudhary, founder of the Bharat Ki Beti Foundation, which focuses on vital aspects of women’s health, serves as an inspiration to many. Through her foundation, Surbhi sheds light on Menstrual Hygiene, Mental Health, Nutrition Education, Financial Literacy and the Inclusion of women. Additionally, she launched her own business, Ekobae – Eco-Friendly Before Anything Else, aimed at empowering women financially by selling handicraft items made by women. Surbhi’s dedication to her cause led her to sacrifice her Harley Davidson bike to raise capital for the business.

In an interview with Local18, Surbhi explained that Ekobae serves two main purposes: reducing plastic usage and promoting women skilled in handicrafts. The shop offers a wide range of products, including home decorative items, yoga mats, products made from Hand palm and palm leaves, bamboo items, khadi and wool clothes, wooden carvings, bags, belts made of jute and more. These handicraft products cater to modern fashion, lifestyle and home needs.

Reflecting on her inspiration to start the business, Surbhi mentioned her desire to support rural women during the pandemic. She observed that while rural women possess great talent, they often lack opportunities. Surbhi’s determination to make a difference stemmed from her experience as the first woman to contest elections from the Yashwant Club of Indore. Despite the challenges posed by the lockdown, Surbhi seized the opportunity to raise awareness about eco-friendly living.

Currently, Ekobae employs 400 tribal women artists, providing them with recognition and employment. Surbhi emphasises the importance of reducing plastic usage and returning to traditional materials like grass, bamboo and cloth. She believes that such eco-friendly practices contribute to a stable climate and healthier living. Through Ekobae, Surbhi aims to create a sustainable environment where people can thrive while preserving the planet.
