New Delhi: Supreme Court on Monday expressed satisfaction on steps taken by the Centre for installation of ‘Kavach’ anti-collision system in trains and disposed of a PIL seeking a direction to implement the indigenously-developed train protection system.
After being informed by attorney general R Venkataramani about the steps taken to prevent rail accidents, a bench of Justices Surya Kant and K V Viswanathan said that, “We appreciate the steps taken by Indian Railways.That being so, we are satisfied that the initiation of these proceedings in the public interest have been adequately addressed by the Union of India and Indian Railways.”
The court had agreed to hear the PIL on implementation of ‘Kavach’ and had asked the Centre to brief it on steps taken or proposed to be taken for putting in place anti-collision systems to prevent train accidents.

‘Kavach’ controls the speed of the train by automatic application of brakes in case the loco pilot fails to do so. It also helps in case a loco pilot ignores signals or over speeds. It assists train operations during bad weather conditions and dense fog. It has been designed to bring a train to a halt automatically if it detects another train on the same line within a specified distance.
Seeking the court’s intervention, petitioner-advocate Vishal Tiwari had said hundreds of people died every year due to rail accidents and there was a need for the court to pass directions for implementation of the ‘Kavach’ system.
